Drummers are stealing the spotlight at a unique Halloween performance, Paranormal Percussion, a local show that exclusively features drums and percussion.
“I realized that people in Utah really love Halloween, and they also love drumming, so we decided to combine the two,” said the show’s founder, Matt Nickle.
Presented by Warehouse 5 Drum Theatre, Paranormal Percussion strikes the perfect balance between spooky and family-friendly entertainment. “Each year, I create new arrangements,” Nickle shared. “I enjoy playing themes from Ghostbusters and Thriller, and it’s especially fun to perform on unconventional instruments like a coffin or a car.”
“It’s really about a group of us drummers who have been playing our whole lives, coming together to have a great time beating drums,” said performer Derek Julio.
Since its inception in 2019, the show has attracted audiences from all over the state, eager to see their favorite Halloween songs come to life on stage. Both Nickle and Julio report that audience feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
“It feels wonderful to know they’ve had a great time and a memorable experience,” Julio noted. “It’s meant to be spooky and a bit fun; I think a lot of it is really humorous,” he added.
Warehouse 5 Drum Theatre aims to keep delighting audiences and shining a light on drummers by expanding their offerings to include other seasonal shows.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling for me. The first year was quite nerve-wracking because I had these arrangements but wasn’t sure if they would work live. However, once we put the show together, it was truly rewarding,” Nickle concluded.
