The 7th International Piano Competition hosted by NTD officially began in New York on Monday, featuring participants from Europe, Asia, and America.
On Tuesday, the first day of the preliminary round, a total of 10 contestants showcased their talents at the Kaufman Music Center. The competition will unfold over the course of six days.
Elie Casbi, a contestant from France, shared, “Whatever happens next, I will have a very, very good memory of this moment.”
The competition’s mission is to promote the traditional arts of “pure authenticity, pure goodness, and pure beauty.” Contestants are limited to performing piano works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.
Ching-Yi Lin, a contestant from Taiwan, noted, “All the repertoire that NTD chose for competitors is very conventional and also very authentic.”
Elie Casbi expressed some surprise, saying, “I was a bit surprised that the competition requires classical repertoire. It’s an unusual feature.”
Tom Han, a contestant from Canada, remarked, “This kind of music can be treated as a language. The content inside, I think, is compassionate. When you listen to this kind of music, you will feel very calm and peaceful inside.”
This year’s competition includes a specially commissioned piece, adapted from one of the vocal compositions by the Artistic Director of Shen Yun Performing Arts, D. F. The commissioned work, titled “Holy Grace,” is a symphonic poem that features classical Chinese music for the piano.
Semifinalists will have the opportunity to vie for the “Best Rendition Award of the Commissioned Composition.”
The preliminary round will continue on Wednesday, with the semifinals, finals, and winners’ concert open to the public and livestreamed on NTD’s and The Epoch Times’ websites and social media channels.
