Cornish audiences will soon experience the future of piano performance through two concerts by the innovative pianist and composer known as Larkhall.
Presented by Carn to Cove, Cornwall’s rural touring scheme, the performances are scheduled for Friday, October 18, at St Germans Priory and Saturday, October 19, at Redruth Wesley Chapel.
Larkhall, accompanied by his computer co-performer Otto, offers an immersive experience that allows audiences to both hear and see music. Otto, an advanced AI system, interprets musical nuances in real time, generating visuals that synchronize with Larkhall’s piano playing.
Larkhall commented, “What if you could see music? Piano of the Future answers that question, presenting a journey that combines classical piano with cutting-edge technology. The result is a blend of sound and sight that pushes the boundaries of traditional concerts.”
The concert venues add an extra layer of magic to the experience. St Germans Priory, a Grade 1 listed Norman church built in the early 1200s, stands on the site of Cornwall’s first cathedral. The Priory’s twin towers and intricately carved west doorway create a backdrop that connects centuries of history with Larkhall’s futuristic performance.
On the following night, the Redruth Wesley Chapel, a cornerstone of community spirit for nearly two centuries, will host the event. As the chapel approaches its 200th anniversary, it continues its legacy of cultural celebration by embracing this innovative musical experience.
Larkhall is a former prize winner at the International Shostakovich Piano Competition and has performed at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide. Now based in Bath, Mr. Hooper-Williams merges his classical training with modern innovation, using custom-built machines to transform the traditional sound of the piano into something new and exciting.
