Robby Krieger, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, is the latest artist to showcase his guitar skills on Cardboard Sessions, performing on a cardboard-built Telecaster. In this session, he delivers his own interpretation of the blues classic “Little Red Rooster,” a song that was also featured in The Doors’ live performances.
Joining Krieger is the band The Soul Savages, which includes Ed Roth on keyboards, Franklin Vanderbilt on drums, and Kevin Brandon on bass. Collectively, they have collaborated with renowned artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. Additionally, Krieger’s son, Waylon, participates in the session with a matching cardboard-built Stratocaster, exchanging blues-infused licks and solos with his father.
“Music, I think, is the only thing that can mend the world, and I hope we can do that before it’s too late. It’s starting to get to me, but like I say, music is the answer, so let’s keep playing,” Krieger remarked at the conclusion of the six-minute, one-take performance.
This session follows appearances by artists such as Billy Gibbons, J Mascis, Keanu Reeves’ Dogstar, and LP, all of whom have experimented with these cardboard-built guitars, which are expertly crafted at Fender’s facility in Corona, California. Notably, this is the first time a purpose-built Telecaster has been featured in the series.
“A lot of artists will see the cardboard guitar for the first time and joke, ‘You guys just took some pizza boxes and started stacking them together to make a guitar!’” explained Dave Lee of Cardboard Sessions.
“You have these fun, creative ideas, and all of a sudden, they become something. No one’s played legit cardboard instruments before, like a Fender Strat or a real drum set made out of cardboard. It just keeps growing!”
