Rag ‘N’ Bone Man Takes the Stage at BBC Radio 2 Piano Room

by Madonna

This morning on Vernon Kay’s BBC Radio 2 show, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man graced the Radio 2 Piano Room as part of its autumn lineup. The three-time BRIT Award winner performed at the BBC Maida Vale studios, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra. His set included his hit song “Skin,” the debut performance of his new single “Put A Little Hurt On Me,” and a classic cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle.”

Reflecting on the experience of performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man shared with Vernon, “There’s a certain weight that it brings your songs. Honestly, when there’s a lyric that really hits me and these guys are playing behind you, it’s quite difficult not to cry, if I’m totally honest.”

When discussing his aspirations following his early success, he noted that career goals evolve over time. He reminisced, “I remember thinking, ‘Ooh, when I play Scala in Kings Cross, that’ll be that, that’s amazing.’ Then the goalposts move, and suddenly it’s like, ‘Oh, they want you to play Jools Holland.’ I called my mum and said they want me to play Jools Holland, and she’s like, ‘That’s amazing.’”

He added, “There are different points in my career, and I constantly am surprised by the things that I get to do. I’m very lucky and grateful… but no, I didn’t imagine that I would be here. It’s insane. If you’d told my 12-year-old self that I’d be in Maida Vale performing here with an incredible orchestra, it’s ridiculous.”

Vernon also shared a question from the previous Piano Room performer, Marc Almond, who asked Rag ‘N’ Bone Man about his guilty pleasure. He revealed that he has been enjoying “Project Runway” lately, saying, “I don’t know how I got into it. I think it was just lack of sleep. I would go back downstairs because I couldn’t sleep and watch whatever was on TV, and that was the first thing that came on. I found myself sitting there going, ‘You know what, that’s really clever, that’s so clever,’ and I just kept watching.”

Next up for the Piano Room, Paul Weller will perform with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Maida Vale on Thursday, November 7.
