Established in 1991, the International Max Rostal Competition has been held at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) since 2009, catering to violin and viola musicians under the age of 30. Currently taking place, the competition offers cash prizes of €7,000 for the first prize, €3,000 for the second, and €1,500 for the third in both the violin and viola categories.
The finalists for the 2024 viola category are Brian Isaacs, Marina Kosaka, and Kyungsik Shin.
On October 24 and 25, both violin and viola finalists will perform with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra) under the baton of conductor Pavel Baleff. The performances will be available for live streaming here.
The jury for 2024 is chaired by David Geringas and includes members Marianne Piketty, Kyung Sun Lee, Christoph Poppen, Lars Anders Tomter, Nils Mönkemeyer, and Carol Rodland.
Additional awards in the competition feature €500 for the best interpretation of the commissioned work, a €1,000 audience prize, and a €500 special prize from Freunde Junger Musiker Berlin e.V.
Furthermore, the first, second, and third prize winners in both categories will receive five, three, and one set of strings from Pirastro, respectively.
