The World Pipe Band Solo Drumming Championship took place on Saturday at Glasgow Caledonian University, where Portadown celebrated a new world champion. Ethan Young, a member of the Syerla Pipe Band, secured the title of Juvenile Section 3 Under 14 Champion.
Ethan, a Year 10 student at Clounagh Junior High School, has been drumming with the Syerla Pipe Band from Moygashel for just two years. His triumph at the prestigious event is a source of great pride, and he dedicated the win to his parents, instructors, and his late grandfather, Bertie, who passed away earlier this year.
It was a successful day for drummers affiliated with the Northern Ireland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. In Ethan’s category, Callum Freeburn from Ravara placed third, while Syerla drummers Matthew Brownlee and Lexi Kerr secured fourth and fifth positions.
Ashley Steele of Hollymount Pipe Band won the Juvenile Section 1 World title, with Jacob Laird of Bready Ulster Scots finishing fourth. Jamie Coffey from Field Marshal Montgomery took the Juvenile Section 4 World title, while Joshua Green and Lewis Doherty from Closkelt placed third and fifth, respectively.
In the adult category, Northern Ireland’s Steven McWhirter from Inveraray and District Pipe Band claimed the World title, and his Inveraray colleague, Jordan Baillie, won the Tenor drumming title. William Glenholmes and Gareth McLees from Field Marshal Montgomery secured third and fourth places in the Adult snare section, with Jamie Blair from Ravara finishing sixth in the Tenor Section 6 competition.
The future of pipe band drumming in Northern Ireland looks bright, and congratulations go to all the prize winners.
