Gibson has introduced the 1964 SJ-200 acoustic guitar, a recreation of the instrument Jimmy Page played on Led Zeppelin’s iconic debut album. This release expands Gibson’s collaboration with the legendary guitarist, following the launch of the Jimmy Page 1969 EDS-1275 Double Neck earlier this year. The 1964 SJ-200 pays homage to the acoustic guitar Page utilized throughout the ‘60s and early ‘70s.
Developed in close collaboration with significant input from Jimmy Page, the 1964 SJ-200 is available in two versions, both of which come with a hefty price tag. The standard Jimmy Page 1964 SJ-200 will be limited to 100 units, priced at $12,999, while the premium 1964 SJ-200 Collector’s Edition is priced at $19,999, with only 50 units up for grabs.
The $7,000 price difference between the two models is attributed to additional features on the Collector’s Edition, which includes each guitar being signed on the back of the headstock and played by Jimmy Page himself. Notably, the standard edition also features Page’s signature on the soundhole label.
Both models boast a Super Jumbo body crafted from highly flamed AAA maple for the back and sides, along with an AAA Sitka spruce top finished in Cherry Tea sunburst. The 1964 SJ-200 has a slightly deeper body at the neck joint compared to a standard SJ-200, contributing to its distinct sound that Gibson describes as unique among SJ-200 models.
Specifications include a three-piece highly flamed maple neck with a rounded profile, a bound 20-fret rosewood fretboard adorned with Graduated Crown inlays, a ‘60s-style solid rosewood Moustache bridge plate featuring a Tune-O-Matic bridge, and Kluson Waffleback tuners with Keystone buttons.
Each guitar is delivered in a Gibson Custom hardshell case emblazoned with Page’s iconic Zoso logo. Buyers will also receive an extra Tune-O-Matic bridge with gold-plated brass saddles, a Zoso Certificate of Authenticity booklet, and a vintage-style Gibson “The Garden” strap. The Collector’s Edition includes a handcrafted Gibson wooden guitar stand as well.
According to Gibson, the 1964 SJ-200 is modeled after the acoustic guitar Page used while recording Led Zeppelin I, featuring on tracks such as “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” “Your Time Is Gonna Come,” and “Black Mountain Side.” Page also used this guitar during his solo performance on the Julie Felix Show on April 26, 1970, where he played a medley of “White Summer” and “Black Mountain Side.”
It’s important to note that this particular guitar never belonged to Page; it was lent to him by producer Mickie Most. Unfortunately, the original model was stolen many years ago, meaning that no actual guitar was examined during the development of both the 1964 SJ-200 and the 1964 SJ-200 Collector’s Edition.
