In a music landscape where genre-blending often feels contrived, Toronto’s David Matisse, widely known as akaMatisse, has organically fused classical piano with electronic beats. This Thursday, October 24, Matisse, a Juno Award-winning artist, will bring his celebrated LowKey Concert series to Culture in Ivy City, offering a refreshing twist on the traditional piano bar experience.
Presented by Paradise Cove, this free event will transform the versatile Culture venue into an intimate musical laboratory, where Matisse blends his classical training with R&B influences and lo-fi beats from 8 p.m. to midnight. The evening aims to showcase the evolution of classical music while preserving its inherent elegance.
“Paradise Cove is all about creating exceptional experiences that challenge expectations while maintaining the highest standards of quality,” stated Julious Grant, founder of Paradise Cove and chairman of Brand House Group. “Partnering with the LowKey Concert Series aligns perfectly with our mission to support innovative artists who push boundaries while respecting tradition—much like our approach to crafting premium spirits.”
Matisse, who gained recognition as one-third of the electronic music group Keys N Krates, has worked with renowned figures like Diplo and Steve Aoki. His classical background, combined with a deep admiration for film composers like Hans Zimmer, distinguishes this project from typical electronic music events.
“Our goal with LowKey is to create a space where the elegance of traditional piano seamlessly integrates with contemporary electronic sounds,” Matisse explained. “It’s a musical journey that bridges generations and genres, offering something truly unique in today’s music scene.”
The event will feature a carefully curated lineup of local D.C. talent, including violinist Gabrielle Boguslaw, saxophonist Vernon Jones, bassist Big Zayyy from Noochie’s Front Porch Series, and 2024 Wammie Award-winning vocalist Amber Marie. Together, they will create a sonic landscape that connects generational and genre divides.
Opened in 2023 under the direction of Nü Androids, Culture serves as the perfect venue for this musical experiment, with its ability to transform between a nightclub and an art gallery, mirroring LowKey’s fluid approach to musical boundaries.
While the event is free, it is limited to those aged 21 and over, and advance registration via Eventbrite is required.
For anyone looking for a unique Thursday night out, this event promises to be one of D.C.’s most intriguing musical offerings this fall.
