A video featuring a Malay singer who approached a piano busker to perform a Chinese song has taken social media by storm. The clip was shared by busker Winson on Xiaohongshu on Sunday, October 20, capturing the moment when Afiqasy Raaf asked to join him in song while they were busking at the Bukit Bintang MRT station.
“Can I sing?” Afiqasy, an aspiring singer and fellow busker, inquired in Bahasa Melayu. Winson responded, “What song do you want to sing?” Afiqasy replied in Mandarin, expressing his desire to sing A Little Happiness, a popular track by Taiwanese singer Hebe.
Winson was pleasantly surprised by Afiqasy’s Mandarin-speaking skills and his choice of song. After their brief exchange, Afiqasy began singing while Winson accompanied him on the piano.
The memorable performance occurred on Friday, October 18. Winson noted that Afiqasy has been taking Mandarin classes, though he did not attend a Chinese school. He also mentioned that Afiqasy has a passion for Mandarin songs, which motivated him to learn the language.
As of now, the video has received over 5,000 likes on Xiaohongshu, with many netizens praising the unexpected duet.
“I felt this Malay boy’s love for Chinese songs. I could see that he was excited and happy,” one top comment read.
“This is so touching. This is the true beauty of Malaysia,” remarked another user.
One commenter initially speculated that Afiqasy might want to sing Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies, a Cantonese song by the Hong Kong rock band Beyond, which is popular among non-Chinese speakers. Winson confirmed this, stating, “That’s true! Most Malay singers only sing Beyond’s songs, but he said he likes JJ Lin, Jay Chou, and many more.”
