Flutist Leonard Garrison will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. on November 9 in Room 119 of the Westbrook Music Building. The concert is free and open to the public.
Garrison will be joined by Jonathan Sokasits, professor of piano and Byron Jensen Distinguished Professor of Music at Hastings College. The program will feature a diverse selection of works, including Katherine Hoover’s Medieval Suite, two transcriptions of David Del Tredici’s Acrostic Song from Final Alice, Joseph Schwantner’s Black Anemones, and a piece by French composer Albert Roussel, a staple of the French conservatory tradition.
In addition to the recital, Garrison will host a free masterclass from 4 to 5 p.m. on November 9 in Room 110 of the Westbrook Music Building.
“Dr. Garrison has been active in recording new works for flute and brings a wealth of expertise to UNL’s flutists,” said John Bailey, professor of music.
Garrison is emeritus professor and former University Distinguished Professor of Flute at the University of Idaho, where he was a member of the Northwest Wind Quintet. A recognized figure in the flute community, he received the National Flute Association’s Distinguished Service Award and has served as president, secretary, treasurer, and program chair of the NFA.
Currently, Garrison performs with the Scott/Garrison Duo and as principal flutist of the Walla Walla Symphony. He has also performed with the Chicago Symphony, Tulsa Philharmonic, and appeared as a soloist on NPR’s Performance Today. Garrison has won numerous awards, including the Byron Hester Competition, and is a frequent performer at NFA conventions.
A prolific recording artist, Garrison has released 12 CDs and authored Gaston Crunelle and Flute Playing in Twentieth-Century France. His articles have been published in The Flutist Quarterly and Flute Talk.
He holds a Doctorate from Northwestern University, a Master of Music from SUNY Stony Brook, and a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory. Garrison has taught at various institutions, including the University of Tulsa, Bowling Green State University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
