A recent viral video has captured a heartwarming and funny moment featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith. In the clip, a busker sets up his drum kit in an outdoor shopping mall and begins playing along to RHCP’s “Otherside.” Unbeknownst to the drummer, one person in the crowd watching him is none other than Chad Smith. The video is humorously captioned, “Imagine shooting hoops in front of Michael Jordan and not even realizing it?”
The reactions in the comments have been hilarious. One person joked, “Who says he didn’t realize? He was probably sitting there the whole time thinking, ‘omg, omg, don’t mess up, don’t mess up.’” Another commented, “I wish they zoomed out more and Will Ferrell was watching Chad Smith watch this guy.”
The story took a surprising turn when the drummer, Armond Davis, shared his side of the experience in a follow-up clip. Davis explained, “Honestly, as a street performer, sometimes we have incredibly slow days, and that was one of them. I played at least five songs back to back, and I got zero attention. After a while, I just zoned out into the music. By the time I was halfway through ‘Otherside,’ I realized somebody was sitting in front of me.”
He continued, “He had really good energy, right? He was bobbing his head. I could tell he had to be a drummer because of how well he kept the beat with his feet. He looked familiar, but I just couldn’t figure it out. Anyway, I zoned back into the music, finished the song, and he walked away. I thought for sure I was going to get a tip.”
In a “Part II” video, Davis shared that after finishing his set, he was stretching when a woman approached him and asked if he realized that the person watching him was Chad Smith. “My heart stopped,” said Davis. “I was like, ‘Oh! I knew I recognized him!’” The woman pointed to the store Smith had entered, and Davis followed, still processing the surprise.
Then, Smith approached Davis and told him, “Dude, you rocked it!” In that moment, Davis said, “It made me feel like everything I ever did as a drummer was so worth it.”
Davis went on to snap a picture with Smith, and he concluded, “Chad Smith watching me play and saying that I rocked it is definitely more valuable than the tip.”
