Camerata Pacifica, the internationally acclaimed chamber music collective known for its innovative programming, continues its season with a concert showcasing the oboe and viola. The program will include five diverse and inventive works, featuring three solo performances.
The performances will take place on the following dates and locations: Sunday, November 10, at 3:00 pm at the Janet and Ray Scherr Forum in Thousand Oaks; Tuesday, November 12, at 7:30 pm at The Huntington in San Marino; Thursday, November 14, at 8:00 pm at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles; and Friday, November 15, 2024, at 7:00 pm at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.
The concert will begin with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Sonata for Oboe and Piano in D Major, Op. 166, a lively three-movement piece performed by Principal Oboe Nicholas Daniel and Principal Piano Irina Zahharenkova.
Daniel will also perform Two Birthday Fragments by Helen Grime, a rhapsodic work written for him to celebrate his 60th birthday, which he premiered at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2022.
British violist Timothy Ridout will perform two solo pieces, including York Bowen’s spirited Viola Sonata No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 18, and Niloufar Nourbakhsh’s emotionally charged Veiled for Solo Viola and Live Electronics with Fixed Media.
The concert will conclude with Parodia Schumanniana by Thomas Oboe Lee, a lyrical trio featuring both Ridout and Daniel, joined by Zahharenkova. The piece is named after a species of cactus, adding an intriguing twist to this exciting musical offering.
