Vince Gill, the guitarist for the Eagles, recently shared his thoughts on performing at the groundbreaking Sphere stadium in Las Vegas, a venue known for its immersive and visually striking experience. With a massive 20,000-seat capacity and a globe-shaped design, the Sphere has revolutionized the live music scene, but it also brings some unique challenges for performing artists.
In an interview with American Songwriter, Gill described the experience of playing at the Sphere as “staggeringly massive.” He explained, “I was getting kind of where I felt like I was going to fall over because things are tilted, and you think you’re moving, but you’re not. It’s a trip.”
Gill, who joined the Eagles after the passing of co-founder Glenn Frey and was named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2017, also shared an interesting observation about the crowd’s focus during the performance. “It’s the most people I’ve ever been ignored by when I’m playing,” he said with a laugh. “You’re playing, and they’re all staring at all the stuff on the ceiling. They’re not paying any attention to you. It’s kind of fun, really.”
Despite the lack of direct engagement from the audience, Gill clarified that the experience didn’t affect him negatively. He explained, “The whole point of that show and that building is the visual side of it. I never wanted to see anybody running around on the stage and yelling at me and being aerobic and bombs going off and pyro and whatever. And it’s a great show.” For Gill, the spectacle and visual design of the venue are integral to the experience, and he fully appreciates the immersive nature of the performance.
In his reflection, Gill emphasized how the Sphere’s visual and atmospheric focus adds a unique layer to the live music experience, even if it means less direct interaction with the audience.
