Brann Dailor Watches Fan Covers and Teases New Mastodon Projects

by Madonna

Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor recently joined Drumeo to watch and critique several fan covers of the band’s classic tracks. While all the covers were impressive, Dailor particularly enjoyed one fan’s ambitious take on The Last Baron from Crack The Skye. The cover was solid, but Dailor couldn’t help but joke about its challenging length, as the track runs a full 13 minutes. “Every time I play this song, I’m hanging on by the seat of my pants, too. So I get it,” Dailor laughed.

In an interview with Loudwire earlier this year, Dailor also teased some exciting news about new material from Mastodon. According to him, the band has “lots of music” in the works, including two upcoming projects. While the details remain under wraps, it’s clear that new Mastodon is on the horizon.

“We’ve got riffs. Drum beats and riffs,” Dailor said. “I can’t really divulge too much. It’s a hush-hush operation, very top secret… I don’t want to spoil it. There’s lots of music, that’s all I can say. Tons of music. We’ve been writing pretty much nonstop since we got back from South America [in November 2023]. After our tour with Gojira, we had some time off for Christmas and since February, we’ve been hard at work on two different projects — not a double album, but two separate projects.”

Dailor continued, “That’s the nugget I can share with you. Whatever those projects are, nobody knows yet. But there are riffs involved. Some of them are really heavy and tasty, and I really like them. I’m the metalhead in the band, so when we get into those heavy moments, I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, I like that. It’s cool.'”
