The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 2025 GRAMMY® Awards, and Sue Foley has earned a prestigious nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album with her critically acclaimed solo acoustic album, One Guitar Woman. Released on Stony Plain Records, the album showcases Foley’s unique musical vision, setting aside her iconic “Pinky” Telecaster to craft an intimate tribute with a single nylon-stringed Flamenco guitar, her powerful voice, and a deep passion for honoring the trailblazing women who shaped her musical journey.
One Guitar Woman features twelve soulful tracks dedicated to influential female guitarists, including Elizabeth Cotten, Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, French classical guitarist Ida Presti, blues pioneers Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, Latin star Charo, and country music matriarch Maybelle Carter. Foley’s heartfelt and fresh approach provides a poignant homage to these legendary women, highlighting their lasting impact on the world of music.
“With One Guitar Woman, I’ve finally brought to life a dream I’ve had for years—to celebrate the powerful, trailblazing women of guitar,” Foley said. “Seeing it embraced so warmly by my peers in the industry is an overwhelming joy, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
The album has earned widespread acclaim from critics:
“A lush, brilliantly performed salute to women who helped forge the history of the guitar.” — Living Blues Magazine
“The kind of album that will live forever.” — Americana Highways
“Confirms her new status as a major guitar talent.” — Soul Bag Magazine
“Fabulous.” — Guitar Player Magazine
“A sonic tapestry.” — Guitar Girl Magazine
Currently touring with her band across Texas and Canada through January, Foley’s One Guitar Woman acoustic show is more than just a tribute. It’s a transformative journey that channels the spirits of her musical inspirations, reshaping each song with her rich vocals and skillful guitar work. As music writer Hal Horowitz of Rock & Blues Muse notes, “The often spellbinding One Guitar Woman is an enlightening look into her remarkable talents, filtered through the lens of a more intimate expression of the blues.”
Originally from Canada, Sue Foley began her professional career at just sixteen, eventually relocating to Austin, Texas at age twenty-one to record with the legendary Antone’s blues label. She has since been honored as Traditional Blues Female Artist (Koko Taylor Award) at the Blues Music Awards for four consecutive years (2020, 2022-2024) and was named Guitarist of the Year and Blues Act of the Year at the 2023 Austin Music Awards. In 2024, she received the Maple Blues Awards’ Lifetime Achievement/Blues with a Feeling Award. Her previous album, Pinky’s Blues, won Best Traditional Blues Album at the 2022 Blues Music Awards, and her most recent release, Sue Foley Live in Austin Vol. 1 (October 2023), has enjoyed significant airplay.
Foley’s GRAMMY® nomination marks another significant milestone in her ongoing career as one of the most respected and innovative blues musicians of her generation.
