Acclaimed pianist Andrea Lam and award-winning Australian composer Matthew Hindson collaborate on a deeply emotional album that speaks directly to the heart. The music, characterized by themes of sweetness and sadness, love and longing, offers a tender embrace through the resonances of the piano.
The project began during the Covid-19 lockdown when Hindson found himself seeking a more personal connection in his compositions. “Large symphonic works felt irrelevant,” Hindson reflects. “I wanted to create intimate music that connected with our emotions and with each other.”
Lam immediately resonated with the pieces, describing them as introspective and uniquely suited to the piano. “It’s almost like a confessional diary,” she shares. “The music is visceral, with a direct appeal that has an immediate impact. It allows the piano to speak to our deepest emotions.”
Premiered at the Sydney Opera House during International Piano Day 2022, the album’s signature piece, Love, gained recognition with a 2023 Australian Cinematographers Society Gold Tripod award for its accompanying film clip. Each live performance has elicited warmth and familiarity from audiences.
Hindson notes, “Despite their melancholic mood, these pieces paradoxically offer comfort, support, and upliftment.” The album stands as a testament to music’s power to connect and console in challenging times.
