Kiki, a young boy from Mexico, recently became the envy of many when he received a Fender Mustang Bass, famously used by Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.
The heartwarming moment unfolded on November 15, when Green Day performed in Mexico City. After their show, the band and their crew were heading to the airport when they met Kiki and his mother, Alejandra Barrera.
In a video that quickly went viral, Alejandra asked Mike Dirnt for a selfie. Eager to meet the band in person, she got her chance. After snapping the photo, Mike asked Kiki if he could play the guitar. Kiki’s mother explained that while her son didn’t play guitar, he was a pianist.
“You play the piano?” Mike asked. When Kiki nodded, Mike smiled and said, “Okay, now you’re a bass player,” and handed him the bass guitar.
Kiki was left speechless, while Alejandra looked visibly moved by the gesture. Mike, who was thrilled to pass the instrument on, remarked, “The world needs more bass players,” before signing the bass and making it officially Kiki’s.
Mike later shared a photo on Instagram holding the bass, now in the hands of the young fan, with the caption: “Hopefully the boy I gave this bass in Mexico City can have fun with it like me.”
