“If Not For Music,” a nonprofit organization based in Chester County, is dedicated to empowering aspiring musicians in underserved communities by providing access to musical instruments and educational resources.
The organization’s mission took shape when Jae Winter, president and executive director of If Not For Music, was brainstorming nonprofit ideas with her son. In a moment of inspiration, Winter asked him, “What do you need?” His response—“Music”—sparked the creation of the nonprofit.
For Winter’s son, music had a profound impact on his life. By learning instruments like the French Horn, he was able to join his high school marching band. He quickly became involved in educational and community performances, found mentorship, and grew into a leader among his peers. Now, he is studying music education at the Wells School of Music at West Chester University, aiming to give back the gift of music that helped shape his future.
One of the primary goals of If Not For Music is to ensure that aspiring musicians, particularly those in economically disadvantaged areas, are not held back by a lack of access to instruments or training. Many talented individuals, especially in lower-income communities, have the passion and potential for music but face financial barriers. This nonprofit works to remove those obstacles and empower individuals, especially children and young adults, to pursue their musical dreams.
Music has long been recognized for its positive effects on emotional well-being, cognitive development, and community building. The nonprofit is committed to helping young people explore their creativity, build discipline, and gain confidence through music.
One key initiative is the collection of monetary donations and instruments from those who no longer need them.
