The New York Philharmonic has announced that Matías Tarnopolsky will assume the role of President and CEO starting January 1, 2025. Tarnopolsky, who previously served as the Philharmonic’s Vice President of Artistic Planning from 2005 to 2009, will return to guide the institution into a new era. His tenure will coincide with the arrival of Gustavo Dudamel as Music and Artistic Director in September 2026. The two have collaborated extensively in cities like Chicago, New York, and Berkeley.
Dudamel expressed his enthusiasm for Tarnopolsky’s appointment, saying:
“Matías combines a deeply felt love of music with an unwavering commitment to building the best possible future for our art form. With his leadership, I am confident that we will bring to life our extraordinary, shared vision for the New York Philharmonic…I have also discovered that he is someone who understands me innately, both as a musician and as a human. We have a special chemistry, and I know he is the perfect choice for this position.”
Currently serving as the President and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Tarnopolsky has demonstrated visionary leadership throughout his career. Highlights of his tenure in Philadelphia include overseeing the 2021 merger with the Kimmel Center, renaming the orchestra’s home to Marian Anderson Hall, and achieving significant fundraising milestones. His previous roles also include leadership positions at UC Berkeley’s Cal Performances, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Buenos Aires and raised in London, Tarnopolsky holds a degree from King’s College London. His contributions to the arts extend to his service on the Executive Committee of the Avery Fisher Artist Program, the Advisory Council of the Tianjin Juilliard School, and other prestigious boards. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture and the William J. Clothier II Award from the Pan American Association of Philadelphia.
NY Philharmonic Co-Chairmen Peter W. May and Oscar L. Tang lauded his appointment, stating:
“Matías Tarnopolsky is a singular figure among orchestral leaders. Building on his lifelong love for our art form, he has forged impactful collaborations with orchestral musicians and dynamic artistic leaders. He is also a force for innovation who has created new ways of connecting with communities and tapping into emerging technologies.”
As the New York Philharmonic looks ahead to this new chapter, Tarnopolsky’s leadership promises to enhance the orchestra’s global standing and artistic vision.
