Internationally acclaimed violinist Lizzie Ball, raised in Derbyshire and known for sharing the stage with stars like Ariana Grande and Hugh Jackman, is set to return to the region for a special performance to kick off the new year.
Lizzie, alongside renowned pianist James Pearson, will present Gershwin & The Great American Songbook at Sheffield’s Crucible Playhouse on January 11 at 2 p.m. The concert will feature a blend of timeless classics and promises to delight audiences.
The 43-year-old musician, who grew up in Hathersage and attended Lady Manners School in Bakewell, shared her excitement about the event. “This concert is significant for me—it’s a true homecoming performance,” Lizzie said. She plans to stay with her family in Derbyshire while preparing for the show.
“This is my first time performing with Music in the Round and at The Crucible, which makes it extra special,” she added. “Our concert is designed to lift the January blues and set a positive tone for the year ahead. James and I are very versatile. Fans of classical music will get their fill, but we’ll also feature jazz, musical show tunes, and more. It’s going to be an incredible experience.”
Lizzie’s passion for music began at age seven when she was inspired by a violin performance on the radio. She later studied music at St John’s College, Cambridge, and has since gained recognition for her innovative approach to classical music.
Currently based in London, Lizzie is a violinist, vocalist, and concert producer. She founded Classical Kicks Productions to make classical music accessible to wider audiences. Her dedication to music education is evident, as she advocates for children’s access to musical opportunities—a passion rooted in her time as a leader in the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra during her teenage years.
“Music meant everything to me growing up,” Lizzie explained. “Being part of an orchestra and having that support was invaluable. Even if you don’t pursue a career in music, the skills you develop are incredible and transferable to so many areas of life.”
The upcoming concert will also spotlight James Pearson, artistic director of London’s legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. The program features iconic music from Porgy and Bess, West Side Story, and several Gershwin classics.
This captivating performance is set to be a highlight of the new year, offering a unique mix of genres and showcasing the immense talent of two accomplished musicians.
