Australian violinist Johnny van Gend has been appointed as the new Principal First Violin of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO).
Van Gend brings extensive experience from his five years in Germany, where he completed a Master’s degree at the Mozarteum University under the tutelage of Esther Hoppe. During this time, he also participated in the academy program at the Bavarian State Orchestra, where he had the opportunity to lead Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll under the baton of chief conductor Kirill Petrenko. In 2021, van Gend secured a permanent role with Mannheim’s National Theater Orchestra.
The talented violinist began playing at the age of five, receiving his first lessons from Mary Nemet in his hometown of Toowoomba. He further honed his skills under Michele Walsh at the Queensland Conservatorium and Dr. Robin Wilson at the Australian National Academy of Music, where he won the prestigious Concerto Competition and performed with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Van Gend’s accolades also include being a two-time finalist and prizewinner in the Kendall National Violin Competition, cementing his reputation as a rising star in the classical music world.
“He is an unbelievable talent, and we are incredibly lucky to have him,” the QSO announced on Instagram. “Please join us in welcoming Johnny into the Queensland Symphony Orchestra full time!”
This appointment marks a significant return for van Gend, as he brings his international experience back to Australia to contribute to one of the country’s leading orchestras.
