On February 7, 2024, at 7:30 PM, the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra will present a unique evening of piano and planetary exploration at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn.
The concert will feature Gustav Holst’s iconic The Planets alongside Malcolm Arnold’s dazzling Concerto for Orchestra and Piano Duet. This exciting performance will be brought to life by renowned pianists Konstantin Soukhovetski and Slava Gryaznov, under the direction of Maestro Phil Nuzzo.
The first half of the evening will spotlight Soukhovetski and Gryaznov’s virtuosity in Arnold’s rarely performed Concerto for Orchestra and Piano Duet. Composed in 1951, this piece combines technical brilliance with lush melodies and dynamic contrasts, culminating in a lively and spirited rumba.
The second half of the concert will transport the audience into the cosmos with Holst’s The Planets. Each movement of this celestial work, representing the astrological characteristics of different planets, will fill the church’s expansive acoustics with Holst’s evocative orchestration. The performance will be enhanced by projections designed by acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist Nico Lee, transforming the church’s towering walls into a vibrant, immersive dreamscape. Known for her work with artists like Kelly Clarkson and Sia, as well as her feature-length K-Pop documentary on Hulu, Lee will bring her visionary designs to life, offering abstract interpretations of planets and stars through rich colors and textures.
“This concert is where art meets science,” says Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor Phil Nuzzo. “Holst’s The Planets paired with Nico’s stunning visuals celebrates our curiosity about the universe, while Arnold’s concerto highlights the extraordinary talent we have right here on Earth. Together, these works offer inspiration and discovery, linking the infinite vastness of the cosmos with the profound depth of human creativity.”
This performance continues the orchestra’s tradition of combining musical excellence with innovative visual storytelling, following the success of recent productions such as Phantom of the Opera with live orchestral accompaniment to the iconic silent film, and Voices of Light, paired with The Passion of Joan of Arc.
