Lighthouse Poole will host the Zildjian Young Drummer of the Year 2025 competition, now entering its 23rd year. Founded by professional drummer Mike Dolbear, renowned for coordinating the Pandemonium Drummers at the 2012 London Olympics, this event has become a cornerstone in recognizing emerging drumming talent.
Mr. Dolbear commented: “It’s a competition because there’s a winner, but it’s much more than that. It’s a full live show that celebrates the incredible musical creativity of young people in this country.”
The competition, held at Lighthouse since 2023, showcases young musicians in a live performance format. Judges, who are only announced on the day of the event, have included high-profile figures like Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, Stewart Copeland from The Police, and Ian Paice from Deep Purple.
Previous winners have gone on to achieve success in the music industry, with Matty Brown, Stormzy’s drummer, being one of the most notable. Last year’s winner, Jared Agyekum, gained attention for never having owned a drum kit, a remarkable achievement that left Zildjian CEO John Stephans, who attended the final, in disbelief.
The competition features ten finalists, all under the age of 16, who each perform on one of three kits arranged on stage. Participants face three challenges: a two-minute drum solo, a response to an original piece of music, and joining a band on stage to perform another original track.
Mr. Dolbear shared: “One of the most fascinating aspects for me is seeing how the drummers interpret the original track they’re given. This year’s finalists include both an out-and-out rock enthusiast and a die-hard jazz player, with instincts that couldn’t be more different.”
The competition is partnered with Zildjian, the world’s oldest manufacturer of musical instruments, which has helped give the event a global reach.
Mr. Dolbear added: “Zildjian has expanded our global reach, which is exciting, but it’s important that each region remains self-contained. We’re thrilled to continue working with Lighthouse. The tech team is exceptional, and the way the theatre space and entire building are used really suits us.”
