Tristan McCardel, a 16-year-old violinist from the Purcell School, has been named Norfolk Young Musician of the Year 2025.
McCardel triumphed in the prestigious competition, which took place earlier this month and was organized by the Michael Badminton Young Musicians Trust. The event featured 15 talented young musicians from across Norfolk, all showcasing their exceptional musical abilities.
Joely Koos, a renowned cellist and educator, served as the adjudicator and praised the impressive performances of all participants. Jonathan Wortley, chairman of the Trust, also commended the “high standards” displayed throughout the competition.
The second-place award was shared by 14-year-old Kit Shawyer, a violinist from Sheringham High School, and 15-year-old Alena Lai, an oboist from Norwich School.
17-year-old Colette Maxwell-Preston, a cellist from Norwich School, took third place.
Additional prizes were awarded, including the Badminton Trust’s Most Promising String Prize, which went to 14-year-old Isaac Schaad, a violinist from Norwich School. The Piano Prize was claimed by 20-year-old Theo Sanders from the Royal Northern College of Music, while the Norwich Chamber Music’s Most Promising Wind Player Prize was presented to Jack Smith, a saxophonist from Thetford’s Thomas Paine Sixth Form.
