After mesmerizing audiences at Golf Green Central Park, Kolkata, and Bannabagram Baul Ashram, West Bengal, the Sur Jahan World Peace Music Festival is set to conclude its India tour with a two-day concert at Kala Academy, Panjim, on February 7 and 8 from 6 PM onwards. Featuring six remarkable ensembles from India, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Iceland, the festival aims to bring music lovers closer to folk traditions through captivating performances.
Organized by banglanatak dot com in collaboration with the Directorate of Art and Culture, the festival will showcase performances by the Ale Moller Trio, Umbra Ensemble, Folkcorn, Habib Khan Langa and team, Sonia Shirsat Ensemble, and The Ghumat Project Goa.
Amitava Bhattacharya, Founder Director of banglanatak dot com, expressed his excitement about returning to Goa after the last edition in 2020. “Goa is the gateway of culture, and when an international festival like Sur Jahan takes place in India, it is essential that it happens here. The Goan audience is one of the best in India, truly appreciating cultural diversity and different musical styles. Their enthusiastic participation in workshops is incredible,” he shared.
For those interested in exploring musical instruments and the cultural significance of folk music, interactive workshops will be held at Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim, on February 7 and 8 from 10:30 AM onwards.
“This is the first time an Icelandic band will perform in India, and what better place than Goa?” Amitava remarked. “Right now, Iceland’s temperature is -12°C, so the artists are excited to experience Goa’s warm weather. Also, Ale Moller, the godfather of Nordic music, wanted to return after his 2020 performance. Additionally, we have the Netherlands-based band Folkcorn performing for the first time at the festival.”
Beyond the international acts, the festival will also highlight India’s rich folk heritage. Habib Khan Langa and team will present the desert rhythms of Rajasthan, while two renowned Goan ensembles—The Ghumat Project Goa featuring Carlos Gonsalves and Sonia Shirsat Ensemble led by Fadista Sonia Shirsat—will represent local musical traditions.
“This year, we have two Goan ensembles, and we are especially thrilled about Sonia Shirsat’s performance,” Amitava concluded, promising two days of enchanting folk music for all.
