Behringer Revives Classic Sound with the RD-78 Drum Machine, Recreating the Magic of the CR-78

by Madonna

Behringer has introduced the RD-78, a new drum machine that brings back the iconic analog tones of the original CR-78, a machine that helped shape the sound of the 70s and 80s. With true analog circuitry, the RD-78 offers the warmth and depth familiar to the CR-78’s rhythms, while adding new features that allow for more complex beat creation. A company spokesperson explained that the machine would allow users to craft intricate rhythms with the same classic feel.

The CR-78, which was released as one of the first programmable drum machines, is regarded as the grandaddy of all drum machines. It came with 34 built-in rhythm patterns, including rock, swing, waltz, and shuffle, and offered individual drum sounds such as kick, snare, and hi-hat. It was one of the first machines to use a microprocessor, setting the stage for future drum machines. The CR-78’s ability to save user-generated patterns paved the way for its widespread use by artists like Phil Collins, Gary Numan, and Peter Gabriel, who used it to create countless hits.

The 16-step buttons are equipped with LED indicators, making pattern creation intuitive. Additionally, the machine offers 18 controls and 29 switches for direct access to important parameters, giving users comprehensive control over their sound.
