The Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival (TACMF) kicks off its 15th season with two piano recitals by festival director Ian Scarfe.
The performances will take place on Friday, February 14, at 8 p.m. at the Arcata Playhouse in Arcata, and Saturday, February 15, at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center in Weaverville.
The program will showcase several classical masterpieces, including the elegant Preludes and Fugues by J.S. Bach, a selection of nostalgic and expressive Intermezzos by Johannes Brahms, and Edvard Grieg’s lively and virtuosic Holberg Suite.
Scarfe will also present his own piano transcription, the Dracula Suite, an arrangement of music by Philip Glass composed for the original 1931 film, which starred Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula.
“This is a high-risk, high-reward program,” Scarfe explains. “I first played Philip Glass’ ‘Dracula’ score in its original version for string quartet and two pianos. I’m not sure what led me to arrange it for solo piano—perhaps the vampire’s supernatural charm has affected my mind as well! My arrangement captures the loneliness and isolation of Count Dracula’s undead existence, the hypnotic allure he uses to seduce his victims, and the mounting tension toward the end of the film as the heroes confront ‘Dracula.’”
All concerts are open to the public, and instead of fixed ticket prices, music lovers are invited to contribute on a sliding scale, paying what they can.
