Leanna Queen’s career is one that’s sure to spark interest at any cocktail party.
As a piano technician at M. Steinert & Sons, a renowned Boston piano dealer, Queen plays a crucial role in keeping pianos in top condition. The company, an authorized dealer of Steinway pianos for over 160 years, is known for its high standards and fine craftsmanship.
Queen’s job, which involves maintaining, repairing, and tuning both new and used pianos, has kept her busy for about four years. She takes pride in her work, saying, “Whatever I break, I know how to fix 99.9 percent of the time. I have yet to do damage that was irreparable.”
For Queen, the job is both challenging and rewarding. “Each piano is like a puzzle, and I enjoy that. It’s all about problem-solving,” she explained.
The company’s warehouse in Waltham is packed with upright and grand pianos, and Queen feels at ease working with all types of instruments. However, she notes that older pianos tend to be more intricate and harder to work on, with some models having more parts than a car. “Yeah, it’s definitely up there with a car,” she said.
One common question Queen gets asked is whether she plays the piano herself. Her answer? Yes, but not as often as one might expect. “When it’s your job, it’s a little harder to go home and spend even more time with a piano,” she admits with a smile.
