Massachusetts is home to the oldest drum company in the United States — and one of the oldest in the world. Noble and Cooley, based in Granville, has been crafting drums since 1854 and has served a high-profile clientele over the years. However, one of its most famous drums vanished years ago, and now the company is hoping for help in locating it.
General Manager Luke Garro is reaching out to Chronicle viewers in the hopes that someone can help track down this historic instrument.
“Do you have the Lincoln drum?” Garro asked.
The drum in question was created for Abraham Lincoln’s presidential campaign in 1860. “It was made using a rail that he actually split himself,” Garro explained. “According to old journal descriptions, it was one of the most magnificent, beautiful drums ever produced by our factory.”
After being used in Lincoln’s rallies, the drum was donated — but over time, it disappeared, and its whereabouts remain unknown. Garro is now hoping that the public can help bring this significant piece of history back to light.
