Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher recently opened up about the unexpected departure of guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, attributing it to natural changes as people grow apart.
The band’s original lineup had been together for 25 years and released eight albums before Hinds and Mastodon mutually decided to part ways last week.
In an interview with Guitar World, Kelliher reflected on the bond he shared with Hinds over the years, noting the significant achievements they made together.
“What can you say about the legacy of Mastodon’s first 25 years with Brent?” Kelliher asked. “It’s been a fun, wild f—ing ride, that’s for sure. We accomplished things I never imagined possible — Grammys, tours with our heroes like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, and Tool. I cherish every bit of it.”
When discussing Hinds’s departure, Kelliher acknowledged the differing paths they wanted to take moving forward.
“Like a marriage, sometimes people grow apart and become interested in different things,” he explained. “We wish Brent nothing but the best as he chases his dreams.”
Mastodon has not yet announced a permanent replacement for Hinds. However, YouTuber and session musician Ben Eller stepped in to perform during their set at Tool’s “Live In The Sand” three-day festival this past Sunday.
