NJ hardcore band Gel has experienced a sudden breakup due to “heinous acts” allegedly committed by their former guitarist, Anthony Webster, who they parted ways with in 2024. The band issued a statement explaining the situation:
Gel is no longer a band and will not be performing at any of their scheduled upcoming shows. The decision stems from actions by their former guitarist, Anthony Webster, who allegedly committed severe acts in an attempt to advance his own musical career. These actions have caused irreparable damage to the band and have deeply affected them as individuals, making it impossible for them to continue as a band. Some of the actions include:
Webster reportedly stole tens of thousands of dollars from the band, leaving behind evidence that the money was spent on his rent, personal food orders, and other personal expenses. For a period, no one had access to the band’s accounts except him, despite multiple attempts to gain access, as the band members believed they should have shared access. Additionally, he allegedly used the funds for numerous OnlyFans purchases and CashApp transactions, which raised concerns among the band.
He also posted nude images of band members on Reddit without their consent, an action that the band finds deeply troubling. Webster was still part of the band when this occurred, but his inability to cover his tracks led the band to uncover proof of his actions.
Moreover, the band claims that Webster put them in physically dangerous situations on multiple occasions. These included instances of him publicly insulting the band on Twitter, leading to their van window being smashed by a baseball bat, as well as driving recklessly, often refusing to allow others to drive. The band also described instances of Webster throwing objects at them, further contributing to a toxic and unsafe environment.
The band acknowledged that some might question why they didn’t leave sooner. They compared the situation to being in an abusive relationship, where it’s difficult to walk away, especially when one’s passion and life’s work are involved. The band tried to persevere despite the circumstances, but ultimately, they reached a point where they could no longer continue.
Gel expressed their sincerest apologies to anyone personally affected by the breakup, including bands and fans who were counting on them. They specifically apologized to Spiritbox, Volbeat, and their close friends in Anxious, and expressed regret over the cancellation of their shows, including their appearance at Coachella. Gel thanked their fans for their unwavering support over the years and encouraged everyone to take care of one another and cherish their friendships.
Gel’s final show took place in Tokyo just before the announcement, and all future tour dates have been canceled.
