Katatonia’s Jonas Renkse has revealed a major lineup change within the band through a statement on Instagram.

“Anders Nyström and I are parting ways,” Renkse shared. “This was not an easy decision, but it’s become the most realistic option for us to move forward with our individual creative visions and personal schedules. We both need to thrive in our own ways.”

He continued, “Anders and I founded the band in 1991, and his influence on Katatonia’s signature sound is undeniable. As difficult as this situation is, it’s another reminder of how life sometimes interferes with our best-laid plans. I wish Anders nothing but the best for the future.”

Nyström’s departure marks a turning point in the band’s history, bringing an end to a partnership that has shaped the Swedish metal scene for over three decades.

Katatonia’s evolution, as documented by Louder Sound, saw the band transition from their early depressive doom/death metal roots to a more atmospheric and melodic sound. Metal Storm highlighted how the band’s sonic shift was influenced by pioneering acts like Paradise Lost and Anathema, with Nyström’s distinctive guitar work being a central part of this transformation.

According to Last.fm, Katatonia has undergone numerous lineup changes throughout their career, but Renkse and Nyström remained the consistent creative backbone until now. This makes the current split particularly significant in terms of the band’s musical legacy.

The band has stated that they will share updates on their future plans and direction in the coming weeks.
