Alex Lifeson shared his thoughts on modern music, revealing that the days of seeking out new tunes to get excited about are behind him. The iconic guitarist of Rush admitted that he “can’t stand” contemporary pop music.
Having spent nearly five decades redefining the boundaries of popular music with Rush, Lifeson seems content to embrace life at a slower pace. A decade after Rush disbanded and five years following the untimely passing of Neil Peart, which ended any chance of recreating their magic in its original form, Lifeson now enjoys choosing his own path. Whether it’s casual jams with Geddy Lee or exploring new music with his project, Envy of None, Lifeson enjoys doing things on his own terms.
This more relaxed approach seems to extend to his listening habits as well. In a recent interview with All Music, the legendary guitarist confessed that he isn’t keeping up with new music releases:
“Honestly, I don’t listen to much modern music,” Lifeson explained. “I take that back – I did hear a band last week, Måneskin. They’re an Italian band. They sounded really, really good.”
Lifeson clarified that his disinterest in modern music isn’t because he believes there aren’t any great releases; instead, it’s simply a matter of preference. The days of combing through record stores for new albums are behind him:
“I’m not saying there’s no good music around — there is. I just don’t feel like looking for it anymore. Those days are over for me. I don’t go to record stores, buy albums, and go through that whole process anymore.”
“I focus on what I do. These days, I’d rather listen to my own music. I’ve recorded a lot for my personal use, and I play it in the background when we have a dinner party or something. It’s under the radar — no one knows what it is or who it’s by. It’s just pleasant music in the background.”
However, when it comes to pop music, Lifeson doesn’t hold back:
“Modern pop music, all that stuff, I can’t stand it, honestly. It’s all about dancing and jumping around, and I really don’t have a lot of respect for it.”
