The Swiss flute player Sebastian Jacot, who was denied tenure after two years as principal flutist at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, has recently shared a reflective statement on his experience.
After spending 12 years in Germany—seven of which were spent with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and two with the Berliner Philharmoniker—Jacot has announced that it is time for him to move forward.
He acknowledged that things do not always go as planned and that many aspects of life are beyond individual control. When people are entrusted with shaping one’s path, one must accept how they choose to exercise that power. He emphasized that it is not for anyone to judge the motivations or qualifications of others. Instead, the focus should be on doing one’s best, remaining curious, open, and empathetic, and learning to adapt without losing one’s sense of self in the desire to please others—all while choosing kindness.
Jacot expressed his gratitude for the experiences he has gained after reaching the final round for the same position three times over 11 years, winning it once. He shared how much he has learned, how much he has grown, and how much better he feels both as a person and a musician. Despite his progress, Jacot recognizes there is still room for growth.
He also conveyed his pride in maintaining his humanity throughout his professional journey and expressed deep gratitude for the support of his wonderful wife, family, friends, and the musical community that has surrounded him. Jacot concluded by affirming his commitment to building the future with love and integrity, alongside those who continue to support him.
