Brian May Suggests New Queen Music Is Still a Possibility

by Madonna

Three decades after the legendary band’s last studio album, Sir Brian May has not ruled out the prospect of recording new Queen music.

In a recent interview, Brian May was asked about the potential for creating new Queen tracks alongside drummer Roger Taylor. “I think it could happen,” he replied. “Both Roger and I are always writing, coming up with ideas, and working on things in our studios.”

“I might have the beginnings of a Queen song right in front of me now,” May continued. “It’s just a matter of whether the idea matures—whether that initial seed can grow.”

The last Queen album featuring Brian and Roger was Made in Heaven, released in 1995. However, they did release a collaborative record with Paul Rodgers, The Cosmos Rocks, in 2008.

Since Adam Lambert joined Queen as their touring frontman in 2011, the band has not produced any new music, with Lambert remaining cautious about the idea of recording fresh material.

In an October 2024 interview, Roger Taylor expressed openness to the possibility of new Queen songs. “I think we might,” Taylor said. “Brian and I were talking recently, and we both agreed that if we have some good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing. So, I don’t see why not.”

Brian May had also spoken about the possibility of making new music with Adam Lambert. In a 2023 interview with a US radio station, May shared that Queen had “dabbled a little” with recording in the studio but emphasized that any new material would have to be exceptional to be released to the public.

“It’s just that you haven’t heard any of it,” May explained. “If we did put something out, it would have to be something truly special that we would feel comfortable launching.”

Adam Lambert, in the same interview, expressed caution about releasing new material with Queen. “If they’re going to put something out that’s new, it’s got to be at a certain level,” he said. “It has to be the right thing. And I’ve always asked myself, ‘Is it appropriate for me to do new material?’ It scares me.”

Lambert has consistently ruled out the idea of recording with Queen, explaining to Hunger Magazine five years ago, “People always ask if we want to record together, but I’m not sure it makes total sense because it wouldn’t really be Queen to me—it would be different without Freddie (Mercury).”

He added, “My favorite thing is collaborating, putting these concerts together, and creating on stage—it’s incredibly fulfilling and exciting, especially when Brian and Roger like the ideas.”
