The DrumCraft Bell Brass Snare offers a great entry point into the world of cast-shell drums, providing high-quality sound at a more affordable price than some premium models. Originating in the ’80s, the Bell Brass design became famous through bands like Metallica and Nirvana, and now DrumCraft has reintroduced the model with a 14” x 6.5” design priced at £759.
The term “Bell Brass” is a bit of a misnomer, as it actually refers to a cast, solid-shell bronze snare drum. DrumCraft’s model features a 3mm shell thickness, down from the previous 6mm shell, along with triple-flanged hoops and DrumCraft’s Nickelworks throw-off, as well as Remo USA heads. Despite its relatively low price, this drum delivers a punchy, full-bodied sound, with excellent tonal control across its tuning range.
At 7.06kg, the Bell Brass Snare is heavy and robust, and while it’s easy to damage if dropped, it delivers excellent sound, from deep, punchy lows to aggressive, high-tuned attacks. Its overtones can be controlled with dampening, but they contribute to the drum’s power, making it an ideal choice for rock, metal, or any performance where presence is needed.
The Bell Brass snare’s dynamic range allows for quieter gigs, despite its aggressive sound when cranked high. Its satin chrome hardware is a unique style choice, but it may not suit everyone’s taste. Minor adjustments, like swapping out the hoops, can fine-tune the sound further, though the drum is priced competitively compared to premium models.
