Adeniyi Adekoya, widely known as Adeniyi Drumz, has become a prominent figure in Nigeria’s music scene. His inspiring journey from a young boy creating music with makeshift instruments to an internationally celebrated drummer is a testament to passion, perseverance, and commitment to his craft.
Hailing from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Adeniyi’s drumming journey began in his childhood. He was raised in Molete, Ibadan, a vibrant area filled with the sounds of everyday life. Music was an integral part of his family, particularly during their Christian devotionals. From an early age, Adeniyi developed a deep connection to rhythm. Rather than playing with typical toys, he used items like kegs and metal plates to create beats. These formative years of making improvised instruments laid the foundation for his love of drumming.
Growing up in Nigeria, where pursuing music as a career wasn’t always seen as a viable option, Adeniyi faced numerous challenges. “Drumming wasn’t just about noise, it was about expressing myself, about connecting with people,” he explains. Despite these difficulties, he was determined not to let them hold him back.
Adeniyi’s musical passion flourished in church, where he started drumming. Although some neighbors scolded him for the noise, he remained undeterred. Lacking formal music training, he relied on self-teaching, learning by watching other drummers, listening to music, and practicing diligently. His journey was defined by discipline and consistency.
His hard work eventually paid off, as his distinctive style, blending traditional rhythms with modern techniques, attracted attention from the music industry. This recognition led to performances on major stages and global tours.
One of his proudest achievements came when he was awarded Best Drummer of the Year at the prestigious Eko Heritage Awards. The event, held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, honored Adeniyi for his years of dedication and hard work. “This award is not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me,” he said, expressing gratitude to his family, mentors, and fans who contributed to his success.
Adeniyi’s influence extends beyond his performances. He has mentored numerous aspiring drummers, including his younger brother, who became a finalist in Nigeria’s Got Talent. Adeniyi believes that while talent is important, consistency is key to success. “Talent is important, but consistency is what really makes a difference,” he advises young musicians, encouraging them to persevere even in difficult times.
With performances at major events, including a presidential dinner at Aso Villa, Adeniyi’s journey serves as a reminder that success comes from determination and a love for what you do. His story continues to inspire both Nigerian and global audiences.
Now, Adeniyi is bringing his drumming skills to Sheffield on March 26th, 2025, for an event called Drums Dialogue & Rhythm Exchange. At this event, Adeniyi will showcase his talent, share personal stories, and explore various drumming styles. But it won’t be just a performance—he’s inviting the audience to engage. Attendees will have the opportunity to clap along, participate in call-and-response drumming, and experience the music in an interactive way. It’s an exciting chance for everyone to connect through rhythm and immerse themselves in the magic of drumming.
