SLIPKNOT’s drummer Eloy Casagrande recently shared a drum-cam video of his performance with the band, showcasing the track “Gematria (The Killing Name)” from their live show at Centennial Park in Sydney, Australia, on March 8, 2025. The video captures Casagrande’s powerful drumming as he plays alongside his bandmates in what has been a milestone event for the Brazilian musician.
During an interview, Casagrande reflected on the recent changes in his career, particularly regarding his former band, SEPULTURA, and his thoughts on Greyson Nekrutman, the drummer who replaced him in the band. He remarked that when he watches Nekrutman play, it reminds him of his own experience joining SEPULTURA in 2011. “I was his age when I joined SEPULTURA,” Casagrande noted. He expressed admiration for Nekrutman’s skill, mentioning that he used to watch his videos online when he was playing jazz and drum solos. Casagrande also shared that he had a conversation with Nekrutman when the latter visited his studio in São Paulo, offering advice on certain songs but emphasizing that Nekrutman’s talent and ability to play the songs were already impressive.
The interview also touched on how Casagrande joined SLIPKNOT. He recalled receiving a call at the end of 2023 from SLIPKNOT’s manager, asking if he would be interested in auditioning for the band. At the time, SEPULTURA had decided to stop performing, so Casagrande saw it as a natural opportunity to continue his career with a new project. He kept the audition a secret, even from SEPULTURA, and traveled to Palm Springs, California, in January 2024 to audition for SLIPKNOT. The audition process included playing several songs, including “Eyeless,” “Purity,” and “Gematria,” which eventually led to his acceptance into the band.
Casagrande’s transition into SLIPKNOT came after the departure of Jay Weinberg in November 2023. Following Weinberg’s exit, SLIPKNOT hinted at a new drummer, teasing fans with an image of a broken drumstick. SLIPKNOT later explained that the split with Weinberg was a creative decision. Weinberg himself expressed his sadness about the situation, stating that he felt blindsided by the decision. He has since joined SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and INFECTIOUS GROOVES.
Casagrande’s decision to leave SEPULTURA in February 2024 also marked the end of his 13-year tenure with the band, during which he replaced Jean Dolabella. This was just before the band’s 40th-anniversary farewell tour, a decision that left many fans surprised. SEPULTURA announced his departure in a statement, explaining that Casagrande left to pursue other career opportunities.
In addition to his work with SLIPKNOT, Casagrande was recognized as the No. 1 metal drummer in Modern Drummer magazine’s 2024 Readers’ Poll. His work with SLIPKNOT is already making an impact, as the band celebrates the 25th anniversary of their debut album, “Slipknot,” during their “Here Comes The Pain” tour. The band’s latest album, “The End, So Far,” was released in August 2022, marking the last full-length LP before the departure of both keyboardist Craig Jones and drummer Jay Weinberg.
SLIPKNOT guitarist Jim Root also spoke highly of Casagrande’s impact on the band. Root revealed that Casagrande contacted SLIPKNOT directly, sending in videos of his drumming. The band was impressed by his talent and humble attitude, with Root mentioning that Casagrande’s passion for his craft had inspired him and others in the band. Root also highlighted the positive response from South American fans, who were particularly excited about having a Brazilian drummer in SLIPKNOT.
