Gqeberha is about to experience a musical revolution with the premiere of Afromenco, an extraordinary production blending the rich rhythms of African music with the passionate essence of Flamenco guitar.
Taking place on Saturday at 7:30 PM at Centrestage@Baywest, Afromenco promises to captivate audiences with an eclectic blend of musical influences. The performance will showcase Latin-inspired sounds intertwined with African music and guitar styles, offering an unforgettable auditory experience.
The concert will feature contributions from local dance studio Flamenco de Algoa’s talented flamenco artists Margarita Moran, Komani Hara, and Ruth Johnson, who will enhance the event with their dance performances.
At the heart of Afromenco is the internationally acclaimed guitar duo, CH2, known for their virtuosity and innovative approach to classical guitar. Described by guitar legend Lee Ritenour as “one of the best duos in the world,” CH2 has built a stellar reputation for pushing the boundaries of classical guitar.
Joining CH2 on stage will be Gqeberha’s own vocal talent, Thuba Myeki, creating an electrifying collaboration that will deliver a dynamic 90-minute performance. The show will feature a mix of beloved African and Spanish hits, including a stirring cover of “African Dream” and Spanish classics like Volare, Bambaleo, and Enrique Iglesias’ Bailamos.
CH2’s remarkable journey spans over 25 years in the South African music scene, with multiple SA Music Awards and Ghoema awards to their name. The duo also won the Worldwide Classical/Flamenco category at the prestigious Lee Ritenour Six String Theory International Guitar Competition.
Known for their ability to create a full band sound with just two instruments, CH2’s style integrates percussive techniques and bass lines, pushing the boundaries of what classical guitar can achieve. Their flawless technique and infectious rhythms have earned them international acclaim.
Afromenco is the vision of Corneille Hutten, one half of CH2, who aims to bring together the diverse musical landscapes of Africa and Spain in a unique sensory journey. This fusion of African rhythms and the sultry tones of Latin and Flamenco guitar is set to be a mesmerizing experience for music lovers from all walks of life.
