Zakk Wylde, renowned for his distinctive look and powerful guitar playing, recently revealed his admiration for unconventional and “ugly” guitars. In a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine, Wylde confessed to having a soft spot for odd-looking instruments, singling out the Gibson Moderne as the “ugliest” of them all.
Wylde’s visual presence makes him an iconic figure in the metal scene. His personal style and the guitars crafted by his Wylde Audio brand balance classic designs with bold, edgy features. Yet, despite his polished appearance, Wylde is drawn to guitars that stand out in their oddity. When asked about his upcoming Wylde Audio projects, he shared his fascination with unusual guitar shapes, adding that he enjoys following a page on Instagram dedicated to showcasing the most bizarre and obscure instruments.
“I’m a fan of ugly guitars on Instagram. Great page, you’ve got to follow that,” Wylde explained. “They just pick out all the most obscure, odd body shapes or just guitars in general. It’s just awesome. I mean, because we’re fans of guitars, you love your classic Les Paul shape and Strat shape, the classics. They’re classy-looking and everything like that. But I’ve always loved the obscure things. I mean, ever since I’ve been a kid, just making somebody think, ‘That’s got to be the ugliest guitar I’ve ever seen in my life!’ I go, ‘Thank you! Goal reached.'”
The interview also delved into Wylde’s views on the endurance of classic guitar shapes. While he acknowledged the beauty of timeless designs, he pointed out that even legendary guitars like the Gibson Flying V, Explorer, and Moderne were once considered strange and unattractive.
“That’s the beauty of it. It’s just like, you want to keep those classic shapes. But, even when you look back when Gibson came out with the V — they had the V, the Explorer, the Moderne,” Wylde noted. “When they came out with those, people were like, ‘These things are hideous, man! What were you guys thinking?’ And I love them. I love the Moderne. That’s, like, the ugliest of them all. But I think it’s awesome, just because it’s so ugly, it just makes it awesome.”
Zakk Wylde’s appreciation for unconventional guitars proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, with Wylde embracing the charm of instruments that defy traditional aesthetic norms.
