Virtuoso musicians are expected to have a broad understanding of music, both in terms of their instrument and the classics of the genre. While it’s unrealistic to know everything, they should at least be familiar with iconic tracks.
But what happens when a renowned musician admits to not knowing one of the most famous songs in rock history? Pianote recently shared a video of Dream Theater’s keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, listening to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” for the first time. As the song opens, Rudess appears genuinely puzzled, unsure of how it will unfold.
True to his genius, Rudess quickly starts thinking of ways to accompany the song, even as he hears it for the first time. Instead of dominating the track with flashy solos or overpowering flourishes, he creates multiple parts that would complement the original music. At times, he even humorously adds playful, quirky sounds.
“I know the AC/DC song,” Rudess admits to the baffled crew. “But I don’t know that arrangement.” He reveals that he initially believed he was listening to a cover version. It’s a testament to Rudess’s talent and humility that he could approach the track in such an innovative and thoughtful way.
