Tato Aline and ARA are two new performance-oriented sequencers for notes and drums that are currently being developed. The Brazilian company, Tato Audio, is behind these innovative products, aiming to bring fresh options to the electronic music market. Developing such products from scratch requires significant resources, including time, money, and motivation, and the company is fully invested in this endeavor.
Both Aline and ARA are still in the development phase, with their features and designs subject to change before finalization. These products share a common goal: to enhance live performance experiences. Aline serves as a standalone sequencer for notes, while ARA is dedicated to drum sequencing. The focus on separating these functionalities into distinct devices aims to simplify workflow and enhance usability for performers.
Aline is designed as a performance-oriented hardware sequencer featuring 16 layers, each powered by one of eight unique sequencing engines. These engines include four parametric and four imperative types: grid, line, 303, arp, euclidean, call and response, play, and progress. While detailed specifications of these engines are yet to be revealed, their names suggest a wide range of sequencing capabilities. One of the most intriguing aspects of Aline is its ability to blend sequences creatively, allowing each independent sequencer to interact with others. This could result in complex musical compositions, with one layer controlling velocity and another affecting pitch, offering an innovative approach to sequencing.
The hardware interface of Aline includes multiple buttons and six encoders for operation. A bottom row of buttons facilitates step programming, while a built-in display provides real-time visualization of sequences. In terms of connectivity, the device features six CV outputs (three CV and three gate), sync in and out, TRS MIDI in and out, and a USB-C port. While the I/O setup is fairly standard, additional connectivity options could further enhance its versatility.
Alongside Aline, Tato Audio is also developing ARA, a performance-oriented drum sequencer. ARA will support eight tracks or instruments, each capable of 64 steps. Each track will include independent controls for accent, volume, and mute, allowing for detailed rhythmic programming. Additionally, the sequencer will offer polyrhythmic capabilities, enabling each track to have a variable length. Connectivity options will include MIDI, USB, and CV, ensuring seamless integration with various setups. While additional details are not yet available, the focus on performance and real-time control makes ARA a promising addition to the market.
The decision to develop separate devices for note and drum sequencing is notable, as many existing sequencers attempt to combine both functions, often leading to complex menu navigation. By focusing on individual functionalities, Tato Audio aims to create more intuitive and performance-friendly tools. The emphasis on minimalism and ease of use aligns well with the needs of live performers who require efficient and responsive equipment.
