The next Wye Valley Music concert, set for 3 pm on Sunday, April 13th, at St. Briavels Church, promises to be an extraordinary celebration of music for oboe and piano, spanning three centuries. This concert will feature two remarkable young performers: Ewan Millar and Tomos Boyles.
In 2020, Ewan Millar claimed the woodwind final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, advancing to the Grand Final. The Guardian praised his performance, calling it ‘exemplary, a richly shaded account.’ Since then, Ewan has continued to build his career, performing as a soloist in recitals throughout the UK and collaborating with top orchestras and ensembles. Earlier this year, he triumphed in the Wind, Brass, and Percussion category at the Royal Over-Seas League competition and is set to compete in the final at Wigmore Hall in July.
Tomos Boyles, a rising star from Wales, has been gaining recognition as a dynamic concert pianist. Carol Nixon of LMC described him as having “a romantic flair and passion that only comes from intense involvement.” Tomos recently secured first prizes at both the Urdd (Youth) Eisteddfod and the Wales International Piano Festival solo categories, as well as the coveted Blue Ribband at the National Eisteddfod. His upcoming engagements include a chamber recital at Sinfonia Smith Square and a solo recital at Wigmore Hall.
Ewan and Tomos will perform a diverse selection of works, including baroque pieces by JS Bach, CPE Bach, and Marcello; romantic sonatas by Robert Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn; and evocative early 20th-century compositions by Gerald Finzi and Lily Boulanger.
Tickets for the event are priced at £20 (£17 for WVM members, £2 for under 25s), with a printed programme included in the ticket price. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this special recital showcasing two of the UK’s most exciting young musicians.
