From Pharmacy to the Stage: Angela Kozarich’s Passion for Drumming

by Madonna

By day, Angela Kozarich works as a Pharmacy Technician at OhioHealth, ensuring patients receive the care they need. But outside the office, it’s the rhythm of the drums that truly drives her.

Kozarich has been fascinated by drumming for as long as she can remember. “I don’t know why I wanted to play drums, I just knew there was something about the drums,” she recalled. Her journey began in fifth grade, playing snare drum in both marching and concert bands throughout school. However, it wasn’t until 16 years ago that she fully reignited her passion.

Her return to drumming was sparked when her husband found a drum set at a thrift store. “He asked if I wanted to buy it, and I couldn’t pass it up,” she said. She started practicing in the basement, playing along to recordings.

A birthday gift from her husband—a set of drum kit lessons—helped her refine her skills. Her instructor immediately recognized her talent and encouraged her to perform. Before long, she became a regular at Columbus’ local blues jams, where experienced musicians welcomed her into the scene.

Today, Kozarich plays with ‘Change It Up Charlie,’ a band that blends pop, blues, rock, and jazz. They perform at venues and events like Natalie’s Grandview, the Creekside Jazz and Blues Festival in Gahanna, and the Cincinnati Blues Challenge.

For Kozarich, playing in a band is about teamwork. “I really enjoy serving the music, serving the other musicians,” she said. Though she considers herself an introvert, she transforms when she’s behind the drum kit, earning the nickname “Animal” for her high-energy performances.

Her experiences on stage have also influenced her work at the OhioHealth Infusion Pharmacy, where she interacts with patients daily. “Everyone hears the drums. I just have to put myself out there,” she explained. “It’s taught me how to connect with people, how to get the information I need, and how to be empathetic.”

As a female drummer, Kozarich has encountered challenges and skepticism about her abilities. However, she also serves as an inspiration to young girls who see her perform. “I’ve had people question my abilities, but I’ve also had young girls come up to me saying that I inspire them,” she shared. “They tell me they never thought they could break into the female drummer scene, and I always encourage them to go for it. I hope we see more female drummers in the future.”
