Legendary Drummer Mikkey Dee Shines at The Europe Drum Show in Germany

by Madonna

Mikkey Dee, acclaimed drummer known for his tenure with both MOTÖRHEAD and SCORPIONS, took center stage at this year’s edition of The Europe Drum Show, held on March 29 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The event, which spans two days, celebrates the artistry of drumming and percussion, drawing enthusiasts and professionals from across Europe.

Born in Sweden and of Greek descent, Dee rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with his rapid-fire technique and surgical precision behind the kit. His early breakthrough came when he moved to Copenhagen in 1985 to play with GEISHA, which eventually led to a pivotal role in KING DIAMOND. During his time with the band, he recorded on the iconic albums Abigail (1987) and Them (1988), and contributed as a session drummer on Conspiracy (1989). However, feeling creatively limited, Dee exited the group following the latter’s release.

In 1990, Dee collaborated with Don Dokken on the solo project Up From The Ashes, contributing to the MTV-favored tracks “Stay” and “Mirror Mirror.” The project saw its own headline tour and included opening slots for heavy metal giants JUDAS PRIEST. Around the same period, Dee also briefly performed with the band WORLD WAR THREE (WWIII).

Although Lemmy Kilmister of MOTÖRHEAD had tried to recruit Dee as early as 1985, it wasn’t until 1992 that Dee joined the band, stepping in for former drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor. Dee’s first appearance with MOTÖRHEAD was on August 30, 1992, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, marking the beginning of a long and celebrated era with the band.

In January 2016, Dee was initially set to perform in THIN LIZZY’s anniversary shows. However, he later opted out of the event. Not long afterward, on April 19, it was announced that Dee would temporarily replace drummer James Kottak for 12 headlining North American dates with SCORPIONS, including a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Dee eventually became a permanent member of the legendary German rock band.

SCORPIONS recently returned to the live stage after a hiatus of more than seven months, performing at the 25th edition of the Vive Latino festival on March 15 in Mexico City. The concert, streamed globally via Amazon Music, marked a significant milestone for Dee, who had faced a life-threatening sepsis diagnosis prior to the performance. His son Marcus Dee stepped in to play a few songs during the show, offering support during Mikkey’s ongoing recovery.

Mikkey Dee’s performance at The Europe Drum Show stands as yet another testament to his enduring influence and passion for drumming, further solidifying his legacy as one of rock and metal’s most formidable percussionists.
