Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt: A Compact Powerhouse for Drummers

by Madonna

Sennheiser has released the MD 421 Kompakt, a more compact and user-friendly version of its iconic MD 421 microphone, which has been a staple in the audio industry for decades. This new version offers the same high-quality sound performance as its larger predecessor but comes in a smaller and lighter package. The MD 421 Kompakt is particularly designed for drummers, providing an excellent solution for capturing toms, snare, and even bass drums, all while maintaining the versatility that has made the original a favorite in various audio applications.

The MD 421 has long been known for its wide frequency response and ability to handle high sound pressure levels (SPL), making it a favorite for a wide range of instruments. It has gained recognition for its clear and robust sound, but its large size has always been a challenge, especially when it comes to mounting it on a drum kit. Unlike some smaller mics, the MD 421 is too big for a standard mic clip, meaning that drummers typically needed multiple stands to accommodate it. With the new MD 421 Kompakt, Sennheiser solves this issue by offering a microphone that is small enough to be mounted directly on the drum hoop, making it a more convenient and accessible option for drummers.

The Kompakt comes neatly packaged in a cardboard box lined with foam, and although the mic is initially shrink-wrapped to the packaging, it’s easy to unpack. Sennheiser includes a pencil case and a drum clamp with the mic, ensuring that users can start using it right out of the box. Upon first impression, the Kompakt feels surprisingly light, especially when compared to the classic MD 421. Its weight is more on par with other drum mics, such as the Sennheiser E604, which also features a similar mounting system.

Setting up the mic is straightforward—simply attach it to the clamp, mount it on the drum rim, and you’re ready to go. However, the first minor drawback is the clip, which uses a friction-style screw to adjust the angle. While this makes repositioning the mic quick and easy, it also means the mic can slip over time, causing it to press against the drumhead during a performance. Tightening the screw resolves the issue, but a thumbwheel would have provided a more secure way to fix the mic in place.

Once positioned correctly, the MD 421 Kompakt excels in its performance. On toms, the mic captures a rich, rounded sound, emphasizing the lower frequencies while providing a slight top-end boost for clarity. This natural and transparent sound gives the user full control over the signal for post-processing, allowing for a more tailored mix. The mic performs equally well on snare drums, picking up both the body and the crack of the drum, even when positioned closely. The compact design of the mic also makes it easier to adjust its angle without interference from the cable or exhaust end.

While the MD 421 Kompakt can work on kick drums, it performs best as a close mic on the batter head, capturing the click and attack of the beater rather than attempting to capture the full depth of the bass drum. In live settings, it will cover the bass drum’s full range, but it does have limitations with its 30Hz floor, rolling off at around 80Hz. For those seeking a more tailored low-end response, other microphones specifically designed for kick drums may be a better choice.

Despite its reduced size and price, the MD 421 Kompakt still delivers high-quality performance. It currently retails for approximately £100 less than the full-sized MD 421, making it a more affordable option for those who want the classic sound of the MD 421 in a more practical and live-friendly form. While it faces competition from microphones like the Audix D2 or D4, the MD 421 Kompakt offers a more natural, open sound that is ideal for live performances. For drummers looking for a high-quality, versatile microphone that doesn’t require a large setup, the MD 421 Kompakt is a great option.
