As The Piano returns for its third season on Channel 4, familiar hosts Claudia Winkleman and Mika resume their roles guiding amateur pianists through the competition, set in some of the UK’s busiest train stations. However, one familiar face is noticeably absent this time around—internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang will not be returning for the new season.
Lang Lang’s absence comes as a result of scheduling conflicts with his global concert tour, which clashes with the filming of the show. His final appearance was in The Piano Christmas special. The celebrated pianist expressed heartfelt sentiments when announcing his departure, stating that mentoring on the show and witnessing the incredible piano talent across the UK had been a true joy. He admitted he would deeply miss working alongside Claudia and Mika.
Mika also shared his personal feelings about Lang Lang’s exit, describing it as “destabilising.” He recalled fond moments working with the pianist, highlighting Lang Lang’s purity and deep knowledge of classical music, even if at times he had to explain popular music references such as ABBA to him. Claudia echoed the sentiment, describing Lang Lang as “adorable” and emphasized that once someone is part of The Piano, they are always part of it. She continues to keep in touch with past contestants and their families, underscoring the community built through the show. Although there was no official farewell for Lang Lang, both Mika and Claudia made it clear he would always be welcome to return.
While Lang Lang embarks on an international tour kicking off in April, Channel 4 has introduced a high-profile successor to step into the mentoring role. Grammy-winning artist Jon Batiste has joined the third season as Lang Lang’s replacement. A celebrated singer, songwriter, and composer, Batiste has previously collaborated with music icons such as Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey. Now he brings his expertise and energy to The Piano.
Jon Batiste expressed his excitement about joining the show, calling it a joy to mentor talented pianists and share his lifelong passion for the instrument. He emphasized the power of music to unite communities and looked forward to connecting with contestants in train stations across the UK. He described the opportunity as a continuation of his musical journey, which has taken him from performing in public spaces to major concert venues. Batiste also spoke highly of working alongside Mika and Claudia, praising their unique talents and chemistry.
Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer, Ian Katz, acknowledged Lang Lang’s role in establishing the show’s success, but also expressed strong confidence in Jon Batiste’s ability to carry the mantle forward. He described Batiste as an “astonishing musician” capable of performing everything from Beethoven concertos to modern pop hits, noting his wide-ranging talent and vibrant energy.
Mika reflected on the shift between the two mentors, describing Jon’s arrival as invigorating. He remarked that Batiste brought a new dynamic to the show, enriched by his diverse musical background, and suggested that change has brought a refreshing energy to the series.
While a fourth season of The Piano has not yet been confirmed, the impact of this season’s new mentor is expected to influence the future direction of the show. As Jon Batiste steps in and Lang Lang tours internationally, the series continues to celebrate the beauty of music, community, and undiscovered talent.
