Erica Synths has introduced the Hexinverter Mutant BD9, a powerful new modular bass drum module that captures the essence of the iconic TR-909 while adding layers of modern flexibility and grit. According to the company, this module is Hexinverter’s unique interpretation of the legendary bass drum, brought into the Eurorack format with enhanced capabilities. A spokesperson emphasized that the BD9 offers “more power, grit and flexibility,” making it a compelling tool for modular enthusiasts and techno producers alike.
At its core, the Mutant BD9 features a primary analog VCO that delivers the classic sinusoidal bass drum tone reminiscent of the TR-909. Users can also switch the waveform to a square wave to explore alternative tonal characteristics. The oscillator’s pitch range extends broadly, spanning frequencies from approximately 30Hz to 240Hz, and includes voltage control for dynamic modulation. One of the BD9’s standout features is its innovative pitch decay circuit, which allows users to shape the pitch modulation envelope in duration and intensity—ranging from tight, percussive blips to sweeping, tom-like pitch curves.
Amplitude decay is another key component, offering adjustable control over the length of the bass drum—from crisp, punchy kicks to deep, booming impacts. This parameter also supports voltage control and responds quickly to CV modulation, giving producers the ability to vary the decay length on a step-by-step basis for intricate rhythmic variations.
To enhance the attack of the drum, the BD9 incorporates a click generator that adds a transient punch to the onset of the sound. This circuitry can be finely adjusted for subtle or dramatic results, shaping the initial impact with precision. Complementing the main oscillator, a square wave sub-oscillator can be blended into the signal path, both manually and via voltage control. This sub layer introduces added depth or radical timbral shifts depending on the settings.
The BD9’s overall sonic character is heavily influenced by its drive circuit, which spans from warm, analog richness to aggressive, overdriven saturation. Unlike classic drum machines limited to line-level output, the BD9 is designed to deliver modular-level signals, providing a robust output that integrates seamlessly into Eurorack setups.
The Hexinverter Mutant BD9 is priced at €180 and offers an appealing blend of vintage character and modular versatility, making it an exciting addition to the Erica Synths product lineup and to any modular percussion system seeking a modern take on a timeless drum sound.
