Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica, founded in Helsinki in 1993, is preparing to reunite with their fans in Türkiye this summer. Renowned for their powerful cello renditions of Metallica’s classic hits, the band is scheduled to perform in Ankara on August 21 at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Alumni Association Visnelik Facility, and in Istanbul on August 22 at Kucukciftlik Park. These concerts are part of their ongoing “Plays Metallica Vol. 2” world tour, which continues the legacy of their groundbreaking early work.
Tickets for both shows became available today through Bubilet, with strong demand anticipated. Apocalyptica has long enjoyed a devoted fanbase in Türkiye, and anticipation for their return has been high. In a message shared alongside the concert announcement on social media, the band directly addressed their Turkish fans with a promise: “You asked us to come back—and we will.”
Apocalyptica’s journey began with three classically trained cellists—Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso—graduates of the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They later expanded their sound by incorporating drummer Mikko Siren and vocalist Franky Perez. Their innovative blend of classical technique and heavy metal sensibilities allowed them to carve out a unique niche within the global metal scene.
The group initially gained attention for their instrumental Metallica covers, played solely on cellos. Their interpretation of metal through classical instruments not only distinguished them but also helped define a new genre often referred to as neoclassical metal. Over the years, they have continued to evolve, releasing original compositions and selling more than four million albums worldwide.
Apocalyptica has also connected with Turkish audiences through music beyond the stage. Notably, they collaborated with Turkish rock legend Sebnem Ferah, contributing to two versions of her popular song “Perdeler.” One version stayed true to Ferah’s original style, while the other showcased Apocalyptica’s signature orchestral metal sound, and both were featured on her album.
Despite some lineup changes over time, including the departure of founding member Max Lilja and the replacement of Antero Manninen by Perttu Kivilaakso, the core spirit of the band has remained intact. Kivilaakso, who transitioned from the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra to the world of metal, brought fresh energy that further solidified the group’s dynamic presence.
Today, Apocalyptica stands as one of metal’s most original and enduring acts. Their ability to reinterpret Metallica’s iconic songs through classical instrumentation continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Their upcoming performances in Türkiye promise not only nostalgia but also a renewed celebration of their artistry—offering fans a chance to experience the fusion of cello and metal that has defined Apocalyptica for over three decades.
